Ariana Grande recently spoke out about speculation surrounding her appearance and called for a stop to the “dangerous” culture of commenting on people’s weight and looks. The singer, who is currently promoting her role in the upcoming Wicked movie, became emotional while discussing the scrutiny she has faced during her career.
Grande pointed out the ways in which society comfortably criticizes the appearance of a celebrity or an ordinary citizen: it is dangerous. As she said, since she got into the public eye during her teenage years, people’s comments about her appearance haven’t stopped, saying this is like being a “specimen on a petri dish.” She said no matter how she changes, more criticisms come.
She said that the unsolicited comments regarding appearance or health or choice are always uncomfortable and upsetting, regardless of the scale, and compared to the similar remarks she gets during family gatherings. Grande added that such comments are something that society needs to move on from to begin with.
This comes after fans voiced concerns over her physical appearance during a Wicked promotional event. Speaking on the topic, Grande highlighted the emotional toll of these conversations and advocated for more empathy and respect for personal boundaries.
