Jamie Morrison, the drummer for the legendary rock band Stereophonics, was rushed to the hospital just minutes before a scheduled performance in Nottingham on Monday evening (25 November). Morrison, 41, was scheduled to take the stage with his other band, 86TVs, when the sudden cancellation of the show was announced because of medical advice.
The band is in the later stages of their 2024 tour, and they have already booked dates in some of the cities, among them Manchester, Bristol, London, Cambridge, and Leeds. They were to stage the last show on December 1. However, doctors have advised them all remaining dates.
The band expressed this in a very heart-wrenching post shared on social media. “We had quite a dramatic day yesterday when, minutes before doors opened in Nottingham, Jamie was rushed into hospital. He is still in there and has been strongly advised by doctors to not attempt to do the shows this week.”
The message continued, detailing the group’s collective disappointment: “We are all heartbroken about this – the shows on this run really have been our best ever – but obviously health comes first.” Fans were also encouraged to share their support for Morrison. “Huge apologies to anyone who has made plans for these shows, especially with long-distance travel.”. We have received word that there is a number of you out there who have plans set aside this for a long time, looking to end off your release week with us. We appreciate you all and will not forget your contributions towards supporting our record. Do call your point of sale and get back for refunds.
Fans and Peer Musicians Stand Behind Morrison
Since the public announcement, there have been many messages of support to Morrison from fans and fellow artists. Singer Kate Nash is famous for the hit “Foundations” and showed concern in an online message saying, “Sending love, hope he has a speedy recovery.”
Fans echoed these sentiments, with one writing, “Omg, we hope he will recover as well as possible. Lots of love!” Another added, “Sending out love, positivity, and healing vibes to Jamie!”
Morrison’s Career and 86TVs’ Rise
Jamie Morrison has become an integral part of Stereophonics since he joined them in 2012 following his time with the Noisettes, whom he performed with from 2003. Morrison’s energetic beats have been an essential contributor to Stereophonics’ success throughout the years.
In addition to his work with Stereophonics, Morrison has been involved in 86TVs, a group he co-founded alongside Hugo and Felix White, former members of The Maccabees, and their brother Will. The band, which debuted in 2022, released its self-titled album earlier this year under Parlophone Records, earning praise for its fresh sound and energetic performances.
Despite the current setback, 86TVs had been having a strong year with their tour being met with rave reviews from attendees. The recent message from the band was emotional in expressing the frustration of halting their momentum but reiterated that Morrison’s health is first and foremost.
A Disappointing Turn for the Band and Fans
The sudden cancellation of the remaining shows was disappointing to fans who had been waiting eagerly. Many had planned extensive travel to see 86TVs, especially since their recent album had been growing in popularity. However, the collective sentiment remains one of understanding and concern for Morrison’s well-being.
As fans wait for further updates, the overwhelming hope is for Morrison to make a swift and full recovery. Though the tour may have ended abruptly, the support shown by the community has been a testament to the deep connection between the band and their audience.
It reminds everyone that life on the road is demanding in both the physical and emotional sense. The health of artists will always come before performance schedules. For now, the well wishes from fans of both Stereophonics and 86TVs can only hope to see Morrison behind the drum kit once again when the time comes.
