Project Overview:
Missed bin collections and recycling confusion remain common issues for many households. The Salford Bin App is a community-focused digital project exploring how technology can improve waste management awareness and efficiency.
The app is designed to provide bin collection reminders, waste-sorting guidance, and local schedule updates, helping residents reduce missed collections and improve recycling habits.
The system has been planned and architected by Saleem, a technical lead who has focused on building a lightweight, mobile-first solution that integrates local authority data while minimising personal data collection.
Early prototype demonstrations involved around 200 local residents, with feedback suggesting improved awareness of collection schedules and clearer understanding of recycling categories.
“Small reminders can have a big impact at community level,” said Saleem. “The aim is to make waste management easier, not more complicated.”
The project remains in a design and planning stage, with future potential as a scalable model for other local authorities and smart-city initiatives.
