Late-night talk power and prominent American leader, Jimmic Kimmel opened up by saying it’s a terrible night referring to the presidency election that got Donald Trump victorious. Taking in all fairness the democratic electoral procedure, Jimmic said “This is the choice we made”. Additionally, his expression portrayed what lots of people did with very different visions before coming into such a result after all.
Kimmel did not beat around the bush when he labeled the election “a choice between a prosecutor and a criminal,” adding that America had voted for the latter. From a global viewpoint, he described it as “a really good night” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, which indicated his worry over the future of American support for Ukraine and an emerging change in international alliances.
As he continued speaking, Kimmel visibly broke down, naming those he thought would be most affected by the outcome: “It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go, for health care, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech.” He continued to add to the list the middle class, seniors dependent on social security, NATO allies, and those dedicated to truth, democracy, and decency. It was a terrible night for every one of those who voted against him. And guess what? It was a bad night for all of those who voted for him too; you just don’t realize it yet,” he ended on a somber note.
Not only was Kimmel frustrated. Another talk show host, Stephen Colbert, started his own program with a direct reaction: “Well f***, it happened again.” A strong critic of American politics through sharp commentary, Colbert said the election was “a bizarre and vicious campaign fueled by a desperate need not to go to jail.” He underscored the shock and disappointment that he, and others, felt hearing news of Trump’s win.
Seth Meyers, too, made a remark in reference to the outcome of his NBC late-night program. Famous for his frank views on politics, Meyers said: “I don’t think Donald Trump’s a good person; I’d even go so far as to say he’s a bad person.” “Half the country thinks he’s a good person, or they don’t care that he’s not because they think he’s a good president. That’s how democracy works in America—a country that is a privilege to live in.”.
Days after the election, another viral video was released of a couple who had voted for Kamala Harris crying and giving their account of despairing over the results, saying, “We’re not done.” This video symbolized the feelings of perseverance and readiness to continue for Harris’ supporters.
Popular celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, and Oprah Winfrey were some of the prominent celebrities that supported Kamala Harris in the electoral campaign. However, celebrity endorsements power proved to be weak for her since she did not win the swing states that proved crucial in deciding the race. During this time, Trump, too, received the same high-profile support when his campaign received a generous check from tech mogul Elon Musk and popular podcaster Joe Rogan, who gave a platform to Trump in one of his shows two weeks before the elections.
As news sank in of Trump’s return to the White House, a wide variety of reactions characterized the nation-from those who cheered to others, like Kimmel, Colbert, and Meyers, as they lambasted into public dissent frustration, sadness, and what lies in store for the future under another Trump administration.
