Starting Saturday, January 25, there will be no trains running on the railway line between East Kilbride and Thornliebank. This closure will last until Sunday, May 18. That means for a whole four months, the trains will be taking a break!

But why is this happening? Well, it’s all part of a big project to make the railway better. Network Rail, the organization in charge of railways in the UK, has announced that they will be doing major engineering work to electrify the railway line. What Does Electrification Mean?

What’s Happening During the Closure?

During the four-month closure, many improvements will take place. New stations are planned for East Kilbride and Hairmyres, which will be exciting for future passengers. Along with this, a new footbridge at Busby will be built, and there will be better access at Giffnock. Clarkston will also get a new station entrance!

To make the trains electrified, 22 kilometers of new overhead power cables will be installed. This is a crucial part of the project, as these cables will provide the electricity needed to power the trains. Plus, the track will be lengthened between East Kilbride and Hairmyres to allow for more trains to run smoothly.

Understanding the Engineering Works

Gerry McQuade, who is the director of capital delivery at Network Rail, mentioned that closing the railway is not an easy choice. However, to do the necessary engineering work safely and efficiently, it must be done without trains running. This closure allows them to complete the project faster.

He acknowledged that this closure will affect the people living near the railway and those who rely on the trains for travel. Network Rail is trying to give everyone plenty of notice—three months—so that they can make other travel plans during this time.

What Are the Alternatives?

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail’s service delivery director, explained that the works being done are essential for the electrification project. Since there won’t be any trains running to and from East Kilbride during the 16-week closure, ScotRail will create an alternate transport plan. This means that they will provide replacement buses to help passengers get where they need to go.

ScotRail will be sharing all the details about the replacement buses and other travel options through their customer information channels. This way, travelers can stay updated on where the buses will operate and what other routes are available to them.

Communication is Key!

Damian Briody, who is in charge of rail projects at Transport Scotland, stated that while no one likes delays or disruptions, the improvements being made are necessary. It’s good to see that Network Rail and ScotRail are working together to ensure passengers are well-informed about their travel options.

So, even though it might be a hassle for some, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel! When the work is completed in May 2025, the new Hairmyres station will open to the public, giving everyone a fresh new spot to catch their train.
