In an honest interview, Sophie Turner revealed how she left the United States after her divorce from ex-husband Joe Jonas. The 28-year-old Game of Thrones actress spoke on a very intense year of personal and professional change from motherhood to homesickness while gracing the cover of Harper’s Bazaar for their December and January issue.
Turn Turner one of the personalities whose achievement shall be recognized at Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2024. She finalized her divorce with Jonas last September; they were married in 2019, and so far, they have produced two daughters: Willa who is four years, Delphine who is two years. Although the case hearings often dragged out and fought over the terms of the custody arrangement, the actress seems to have finally stabilized her life in her homeland UK. As she explains why she had to move back to her homeland, Turner has revealed how strongly she felt the pull of her homeland while going through life changes and motherhood.

“Every city we ended up in, the first thing I’d do was find a British shop and stock up on a month’s worth of chocolate,” she said about her homesickness. Problems in the US, too, such as concerns over rising gun violence and recent legal change, weigh on her mind. “The gun violence, Roe v. Wade being overturned… Everything just kind of piled on,” she said, yearning for the stability she equated with the UK. Her return had been long in preparation as another major reason, related but independent of her love for the UK and its culture, was added in 2022: the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade case, which had protected a woman’s right to abortion up until fetal viability. Within weeks of her return to the UK, Turner settled in and established herself in new settings, reconnecting with friends and family and entering new professional roles.
Ever since she went back, however, she was in news again because of her relation with Peregrine Pearson. The latter is an aristocrat. She has recently taken him officially on Instagram. She shares pictures of time the pair spent over the week, from sailing down the canal to ride over some place in the sky attached to a huge hot balloon. She said, looking back on her return to England, “I’m so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England. I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family.” Six years had passed since she left England, and Turner noted that she missed many of the major life milestones of her friends and family—engagements, births, and other events that she felt she could never truly make up for. In the photoshoot by Harper’s Bazaar, Turner turned up the glamour quotient, sporting modern as well as edgy looks. This included a sheer black and white polka-dot dress and curly locks of massive volume. For the cover photo, she wore bold black and white blazers without wearing a shirt to show her carefree style in keeping with fashion sense. In another look, she donned a sophisticated white shirt along with an elegant fedora to confirm her taste in fashion again.
Professionally, Turner has channeled her personal journey into her latest role: playing the lead in Joan, a six-part drama about a single mother trying to make a life for her children in difficult circumstances.
Here, her character, Joan, turns to crime just to survive, dealing with the intricacies of motherhood, resilience, and survival in a harsh world. “Before I had kids, I was depressed and anxious, and really, I would isolate most of the time,” she said. “Now, probably I live my life through them. I want them to realize me with a social life and working and thriving out there in my career, my relationships.” She confessed that she wants her kids to grow up seeing that their mother is devoted as well as hardworking when it comes to being the best mom for them. “I’ll go back and say, ‘This is why Mummy was away—it’s because she’s doing this for you, so Father Christmas can come with a big bundle of presents,'” she added, smiling. Turner’s role in Joan is both gritty and transformative.
The story follows Joan as she runs away from an abusive marriage, eventually comes to the heart-wrenching decision to put her daughter into care for a little while, and then manages to get a job in a jewelry shop. Then, Joan’s life turns into crime when she starts stealing diamonds and teams up with an antiques dealer named Boisie, played by Frank Dillane, who starred in Harry Potter. All the subtleties of a woman driven by survival and love for her family are found in Turner’s characterizations, reflecting her own personal transformation over the years. On 5 November, she will walk the red carpet for Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. She shall be awarded a Performance Award, which denotes outstanding performances over the years. The event is held in association with The Platinum Card by American Express, no doubt another milestone success in her journey though homecoming this time around-as she is now returning back to her country in England, with new experiences and challenges and dreams ahead for her.
