Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca has reviving the old rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool as one of his objectives at the helm. Though Chelsea have done well by winning every game so far this season, Maresca said they are not yet title contenders.
“I don’t see, at this moment, Chelsea as close to those clubs for many, many reasons,” Maresca admitted. “For sure we work every day to get closer to that club. Knowing it requires work together, day by day, with time, to get close.”
The match between Chelsea and Liverpool reached its peak when they clashed in an inconceivable way mid-2000s, fighting on and off the pitch. In recent years, Liverpool has been concerned with trying to stay up to par with Manchester City in the Premier League.
Maresca, who saw that rivalry firsthand while working under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, believes Chelsea can again be a force of English football. “Hopefully, we can be again there in both, competing for titles,” he said.
So, when Chelsea visit Anfield this weekend to face the Reds, Maresca’s team will look to prove their credentials and take a significant step towards their goal of challenging for silverware. A win would ensure that they moved within a point of Liverpool, making an interesting statement to the rest of the Premier League.
