All Aboard! First Test Train Races on the East West Rail Route

It’s a bright, sunny Monday morning on the tracks between Oxford and Milton Keynes, where something exciting is happening-the first test train running over the newly built East West Rail route. This marks one of the biggest leaps towards Oxford reaching Cambridge again by train. It is the first time that a train has traveled on this line in nearly 60 years, and it is part of a £6 billion scheme to make traveling easier and faster for the residents of the region.

The test train was Chiltern Class 168, which began from Oxford Station at 9:43 AM. This was part of the opening run of East West Rail (EWR), which had been in development for quite some time. It took 42 minutes to cover the journey, and the train accelerated to high speeds of as much as 100 miles per hour at several parts of the track. The train moves very smoothly, which is a proof that the line is practically ready to carry passengers in the near future.

A Long-Awaited Project
The East West Rail project is a big deal for the people of Oxford and Cambridge and everywhere in between. The idea is to establish direct links between these two cities through the train service. Now, when a person wishes to travel from Oxford to Cambridge or vice versa, that journey, by car or coach takes approximately two-and-half hours. When the new railway line opens up completely, the travel time will reduce from an hour and 45 minutes to just 90 minutes! This makes business travel, school, or visiting relatives really great news.

It goes through important towns and most markedly Bicester, Milton Keynes, and Bedford. It will then facilitate the movement of people in those areas easily. On the other hand, it is not just about convenience. Many opportunities will be made available by a quicker, more reliable train service. They can go to seek employment, enroll at a better institution to study, or seek adventure throughout the country.

A Triumphant Test Run
East West Railway Company Chief Executive Officer David Hughes said that he was over the moon about the successful test run by the test train. “This is a fantastic achievement and an incredibly proud moment for everyone here at East West Rail. We can all now look forward to passenger services beginning next year and delivering the improved connectivity which this region so desperately needs.”.

The first leg of the project, which covers the line from Bicester to Bletchley, is almost complete. All the final sections of track had been laid down by early this year, which is a significant milestone for the team working on the project. With the test train now finishing its run, everything is now motoring along in fine style!

The Thrill Builds
People lined the route to get a glimpse of what was happening as the test train rolled down the tracks. For the train enthusiasts and those living locally, such a view was never to be seen again. Some were so excited they even came with step ladders to get a better view! One of those who witnessed the train whizzing by in Winslow, Buckinghamshire, said, “It was so exciting to see history made right in front of our eyes. I can hardly wait for the line to open to passengers.”.

While there is still a bit of work to be done before the line will open, enthusiasm is building. For most riders, the reopening of the line represents more than just a new era of travel – it will be faster and more convenient. It’s not just getting from one place to another; it will be a conduit in connecting communities and providing people with other opportunities.

So, what’s the future?
Even though the test run is already a success, there are still a few things left to be decided. For one, it’s not yet clear which train operator will provide the passenger services on the new route. However, Rianna Stanwell from Chiltern Railways, the company that ran the test train, said she was “delighted” to be part of the project. This would mean that Chiltern Railways might become a possible operator of the passenger services in the not-so-distant future.

News of the successful test run brought smiles to the faces of those at Network Rail, the tracks, and the infrastructure company. The test train’s successful run has been termed a “huge milestone” for the East West Rail project by Christian Irwin, the director for capital delivery at Network Rail. “Today’s first test train has run–that is a huge achievement and brings the return of train services between Oxford and Milton Keynes a step closer to passengers,” Christian added.

The Bigger Picture
Once the East West Rail project is completed, it would make a big difference to the region. This Oxford to Cambridge route is due to open in the early 2030s by then and will have become much needed lifeline for thousands of people. Travel time will be significantly reduced, plus there will be fewer cars on the road to ease traffic and reduce pollution, while this is fantastic news for the environment and anyone who is tired of long journeys in the car.

This project also has the potential to boost the local economy. By making it easier for people to get to work, school, or other destinations, the new rail line helps create more jobs and opportunities in the region. Businesses will be able to reach more customers, and people will have access to a wider range of services and facilities.

The first test train crossed the line without incident, and so it’s only a matter of when passengers will be able to utilize the new service. The team is working tirelessly at East West Rail, and if things go according to plan, passengers can enjoy riding the train as early as next year. For now, all who have worked on this project are celebrating this important milestone and looking forward to the day when the line is fully open.

As one enthusiastic onlooker quoted, “We can’t wait to hop on board and see where this new train line will take us!”

This exciting new chapter in the history of railways is just beginning, and the future seems bright for all those who live along the East West Rail route.
