In a surprising turn of events, Brazil has fined Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, after some users were able to access the site for a short time, despite a ban. This incident has sparked confusion and frustration among many Brazilians.
Last month, Brazil’s government banned X because the platform didn’t meet a deadline to appoint a legal representative in the country. This decision was part of a larger issue that started when a Brazilian judge, Alexandre de Moraes, accused X of spreading false information. As a result, X users in Brazil could no longer access the site.
However, on Wednesday, something unexpected happened. Some Brazilian users found they could access X again. The company had changed how its servers were set up in Brazil, but this restoration was not intentional, according to X. It seems that the change allowed users to get back on the platform for a brief period. But soon after, the access was blocked again.
The Brazilian government didn’t take this lightly. A court quickly fined X five million reais, which is about $920,000. This was a significant penalty for what the court described as a “trick” by the company to bypass the ban. Musk’s other company, Starlink, which provides satellite internet, was also included in this fine.
The confusion didn’t stop there. After the court’s ruling, X switched back to its previous server provider, which made it easier for the government to enforce the ban. According to the ABRINT internet provider association, they noticed the change while testing the new servers. Although X and Cloudflare, a company that provides internet services, haven’t confirmed this switch, ABRINT reported that X’s public network settings indicated they were back to using the earlier setup.
The judge, Alexandre de Moraes, has been tough on Musk’s companies before. He had previously ordered the suspension of several X accounts due to claims of misinformation. Musk’s team seems to have ignored these orders in the past, which adds another layer of tension to this ongoing saga.
On Wednesday, when users regained access, X claimed it was due to an “inadvertent and temporary service restoration.” They mentioned that while they expect access to be blocked again soon, they are trying to work with the Brazilian government to find a way to return to the country permanently.
Some experts were surprised by X’s explanation. Basílio Rodriguez Pérez, an advisor to ABRINT, felt the sudden access appeared planned rather than accidental. He pointed out that X seemed to be using dynamic IP addresses, which can change frequently and make it harder for the government to block the service effectively. The previous setup used static IP addresses, which are easier to block.
Rodriguez Pérez also mentioned that these dynamic addresses could be linked to important services within Brazil. For example, they might connect to PIX, a popular payment service used by millions of Brazilians. Blocking X’s access could accidentally impact other vital services, causing further frustration for users.
Despite the recent events, some legal experts believe that Cloudflare, as a major service provider, could help enforce the ban more effectively if they cooperate with the Brazilian government. Felipe Autran, a lawyer in Brazil’s capital, Brasília, stated, “The ban would be even more effective if Cloudflare really cooperates with the government.” This cooperation is essential because Cloudflare provides services to many Brazilian businesses and government agencies.
Brazil is one of the largest markets for Musk’s social media network. The feud between Musk and Brazilian officials has raised eyebrows and frustrations among citizens. Many feel caught in the middle of a game between the government and X. As Rodriguez Pérez put it, “It’s a game of chess, and we are the pieces on the board.” This sentiment reflects how people feel powerless in this conflict.
