In a statement, the family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news our husband, father, and grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 28. We are all blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he is smiling down at us all.

Born in Brownsville, Texas, Kristofferson carved out a legendary career in both music and film. He quickly emerged as one of the most revered songwriters behind some of country music’s most cherished hits that began with late-1960s outings like “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “For the Good Times,” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”

Though Kristofferson was a fine artist in his own right, most of his songs reached their unforgettable statuses by the voicing talents of other entities. Ray Price’s rendition of “For the Good Times,” and Janis Joplin’s signature interpretation of “Me and Bobby McGee” are two examples by which his songwriting became permanently memorable through their voices.

Kristofferson also gained a fan following through acting. He appeared in many movies during the decades, among them the A Star is Born (1976) with Barbra Streisand, and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), where he shared the screen with Ellen Burstyn. As Abraham Whistler in the Blade series, he made a lasting impression on viewers that is still remembered today. He also appeared with Wesley Snipes in the original film of Blade in 1998, a role he would enjoy repeatedly in the subsequent films.

Kristofferson’s ability, however, went beyond the music charts because he was considered one of the most gifted songwriters from his generation. With long hair, bell-bottom jeans, and a sound deeply influenced by Bob Dylan, Kristofferson became the new breed of country music, which resonated with counterculture themes. He was in the same category with his contemporaries Willie Nelson, John Prine, and Tom T. Hall. In 2009, Willie Nelson publicly lauded his friend, saying, “There’s no better songwriter alive than Kris Kristofferson. Everything he writes is a standard and we’re all just going to have to live with that.”

He won some awards during his career. Some of the notable awards Kristofferson won include four Grammy Awards. One such award was Best Country Song for “Help Me Make It Through the Night” in 1971. He also won Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group, along with his then-wife Rita Coolidge in 1973 and 1975. In 2014, Kristofferson was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a tribute to his groundbreaking contribution to the music world.

In 2021, he officially retired from performing and recording, and decided to quit the limelight. Still, now and then, he will make a surprise appearance on stage as a guest.

In 2006, he said an interview The Associated Press that he attributes his launch career to Johnny Cash because Cash gave him a shot. Kristofferson remembered a memorable night when he met Cash backstage at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time as he was still serving in the Army. “Shaking his hand when I was still in the Army backstage at the Grand Ole Opry was the moment I’d decided I’d come back,” he said. “It was electric. He kind of took me under his wing before he cut any of my songs. He cut my first record that was record of the year. He put me on stage the first time.”

Kris Kristofferson leaves behind a legacy so timeless in music and film that will continue to entertain, inspire, and uplift future generations. Surviving are his wife, Lisa; eight children—Tracy, Kris Jr., Casey, Jesse, Jody, John, Kelly, and Blake; and seven grandchildren. The man whose work made such a tremendous mark on American culture has been an inspiration for fans, friends, and peers who have offered tributes.

As his family so beautifully noted, whenever a rainbow graces the sky, we can remember Kristofferson’s warmth and smile, now looking down on all who cherished him.
