Foo Fighters’ iconic frontman Dave Grohl was recently forced to confront an online rumor about a child he allegedly fathered outside his marriage. The star musician, who has never stopped showing off how much he loves family, has admitted to having an affair and welcoming a baby girl. The post came on Wednesday, 11 September, where Grohl promised in a message via social media to be a “loving and supportive parent” to his child.

In the letter, Grohl said he is now working to make things right with his wife, Jordyn Blum, and their three daughters, Violet, Harper, and Ophelia. He wrote, “I am doing everything possible to regain the trust of my loved ones and seek their forgiveness.” The very public outing of this development kicked off a press firestorm, yet Grohl does seem resolute in getting things right within his family while accepting his own blame.

Not long after Grohl’s announcement, an explosive post appeared on Instagram, showing what many believed to be a photo of his newborn daughter, Roxie Junie Grohl. In the picture, a woman was holding onto the newborn’s hand and her emotional message served as its caption. The woman in the post claimed to be the mother of Grohl’s child and spoke of her joy and thankfulness for Grohl’s support throughout the pregnancy. The post further went on to express a wish to protect the baby’s privacy while celebrating the bond she shared with her child. But Grohl’s publicist was quick to deny the post was authentic, with one telling TMZ that the whole thing was fabricated. Despite attention from near enough every news outlet, Grohl made it known the picture and claims put forth with the picture were not valid. The Independent has contacted his representatives for further comment; he, however, has not released any more information about the baby and the mother, other than to refute the viral post.

Grohl, 55, has been married to Jordyn Blum for over 20 years now.

The couple met in 2001 through the Sunset Marquis Whiskey Bar. Grohl, who has made a career of writing songs with deeply personal lyrics, has spoken publicly about their marriage in interviews, including his one-time trepidation in committing to the relationship. He once admitted having gone on a few dates with Blum before stopping, then waiting a few months before making the call to change his mind. When he finally called her again, Blum answered with, “Oh, I never thought I’d hear from you again.” They finally married in 2003 in their home in Los Angeles and started growing their family upon the births of their three daughters: Violet, Harper, and Ophelia. Through the years, Grohl has spoken on several occasions about the importance of balancing that family life and his rock-star persona.

He has spoken time and again about not wanting to go on extensive tours, as that would mean a lot of time away from his kids. In a 2009 interview with Time, he spoke about how fatherhood flipped his perspective on life and work. “I used to tour nine months out of the year. Now I don’t like being away from my kids for more than 12 days,” he said. “It’s changed everything that I do. When you have kids, you see life through different eyes.” Of course, the recent revelation of Grohl’s cheating ways and a love child born out of wedlock complicated that imagery. Always perceived as a regular guy with a strong family orientation, Grohl now has to move through some rough times in his personal life. Some were shocked by this news, while others applauded him for being responsible and honest about mistakes he has made.

One thing is certain: Grohl’s immediate and extended family will be the focus of his work as he moves into the future.

Honesty on this level—a product of scandal/controversy—is one sadly lacking in so many rock ‘n’ roll scandals. It could be yet another addition to his life story or that one defining chapter that remains in his life for many years to come. For the moment, however, Grohl remains significant in the music world and as a father amidst personal turmoil.
