About The Statement back in 2003, Caine allowed that the character he played was odious. Playing Brossard-a man truly repulsive, even evil-forced Caine to investigate the intricacies of the human condition and burrow into darker levels of his personality. Caine also accepted the task as an opportunity for growth as an artist.

“I’ve never taken a dislike so much to anyone as I do to Brossard,” Caine said. “But that’s exactly why I did the part. I’m always looking for something which will challenge me, make it tougher on myself. After all, I’ve been doing it for a long time now.”

Actually, it is an admission of Caine’s devotion to his profession that he has never stepped away from territory most people would not dare tread. Playing a character he admittedly found abhorrent, he proved capable of overlooking his personal judgment in favor of embracing all the contradictions within the character.

After a seven-decade career, at the ripe age of 90 years, Caine says he is ready to retire. In an interview with BBC Radio, he appeared very contented and ready to get away from the screens.

“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now,” he said. “I’ve had a career filled with incredible roles and fantastic reviews. What more could I ask for?

At the same time, though, many fans may be surprised to find out about Caine’s decision to retire, which is testament enough to his never-dying wonders. His contribution to the world of cinema has been simply beyond any measurement, and the influence he will have on generations to come through actors and audiences alike is unimaginable.
