Weezer Cancels ‘SZNZ’ Box Set Due to Low Sales

Weezer has scrapped plans to release their highly-anticipated ‘SZNZ’ box set, citing poor sales projections. This is supposed to be a companion to their 2022 series of four seasonal EPs: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. An album from the band in 2021, ‘Van Weezer’, begat the EPs, which were initially celebrated with news of a commemorative box set.

Last year, the band teased the ‘SZNZ’ box set as “coming soon” on X/Twitter, but there hasn’t been any follow-up on that. Now he has posted on the Weezerpedia Discord server that those plans have officially been scrapped, the same way the band cut their Broadway run short, citing high costs of staging the full production and only modest sales expectations as the primary factors.

In 2022, Weezer had scheduled a five-date series of performances at the Broadway Theatre in New York, focusing each show on a different ‘SZNZ’ EP. These, too, were canned, due to low ticket sales and expenses being too high. Rivers Cuomo took to Weezer’s Discord page to express his frustration, apologizing to fans who had made plans to come out and thank the Broadway Producer for their efforts.

Even with all that, Weezer is preparing to hit the road this fall with its ‘Voyage To The Blue Planet’ North American tour for a 30th-anniversary celebration of ‘The Blue Album’. The shows will consist of full album performances, plus rarities and special guests, featuring support from both The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. Remaining tickets are still available.
