The hip-hop world is sad today. Chino XL, a talented East Coast rapper, has passed away. He was known for his clever lyrics & unique storytelling. The news came from his Instagram.
A post shared that Ch XL, whose real name was Derek Keith Barbosa, died at home on Sunday morning, July 28. His family shared their deep sorrow in a message on July 30, showing just how much they are hurting.
Chino XL leaves behind his kids—Chynna, Bella, Lyric & Kiyana—his stepson Shawn, and grandchildren Emmy, Emery, Chris, Luis, & Dyani. He is also survived by his mother Carole and his longtime partner Stephanie. His daughters called him a “Girl Dad.” They said he taught them strength & honesty. They take comfort in knowing he is now free from pain.
Chino was born in the Bronx but grew up in New Jersey with his African-American mom. He started making music when he was just a teen. He teamed up with producer Kaoz to create the rap duo Art of Origin. At only 16, he got signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings! His first album, Here to Save You All, came out in April 1996 and got a lot of praise. One song called “Riiiot!” even started a famous beef with Tupac Shakur over some bold lyrics. Tupac responded with his hit “Hit ‘Em Up.”
His career didn’t stop there! In 2001, after Warner Bros Records let him go during a shutdown, he put out his second album through Metro Records. Then came his third album called Poison Pen in 2006. His last project was the double-disc Ricanstruction: The Black Rosary. This one was really personal,, talking about his struggles and life experiences.
Many people in hip-hop paid their respects to Chino XL. Chuck D from Public Enemy shared heartfelt praise on social media. They recognized their special connection within the hip-hop community.
Right now, the family asks for privacy as they grieve. Details about a memorial service will be shared soon.
