Sky’s Big Netflix Shake-Up: Ads Are Coming to Your Screen!

Sky TV customers will find their service changing from next month. The Netflix Basic plan is being axed, with Sky shuffling its customers onto Netflix Standard with ads. This means that viewers are going to start seeing adverts running during their shows, even as the experience is promised to be smooth and ad-free for kids’ profiles.

Sky TV is shaking things up in a move set to hit many of its customers. For anybody out there who loves watching Netflix through Sky, well, from next month you can expect to see something a bit different. The change happens because Netflix is saying goodbye to the Basic package, and Sky will turn to the Standard Package that has ads.

A couple of years ago, Sky did an offer whereby you could get Netflix’s Basic plan included in your TV bundle. This was brilliant as you weren’t paying for Netflix separately. You were getting all of the Netflix shows and movies without advertising, all wrapped up in one price.

However, Netflix has now axed the Basic plan. For people who have Sky TV and use Netflix Basic, that means moving over to the ad-included Standard plan. It is a big change for so many who loved the time on ad-free Netflix.

Sky explained this change in an update that said: “Important updates to your Netflix plan. We wanted to let you know that Netflix has retired their Netflix Basic plan. As a result, the Netflix plan included with your Sky subscription will automatically move over to Netflix Standard with ads.” So from next month you’ll see ads during your Netflix shows and movies.

The new ad-included Standard plan still has some perks. It broadcasts in HD quality, so your shows and movies will be vivid. You will be allowed to watch on multiple devices simultaneously. Sky is guaranteeing that ads will appear only at the natural break points of the shows, like between episodes or during the credits. Ads won’t be run against any kids’ profiles either, so the little ones can still chug away without interjection.

This will hit all Sky Glass and Sky Stream subscribers who currently have the company’s Ultimate TV bundle with Netflix Basic. If that’s you, your Netflix plan will change automatically in September. There’s literally nothing you need to do. That change will just happen. If you’ve signed up to Sky TV in the past few months, though, you’re already on the Netflix Standard plan with ads, so this doesn’t apply to you.

It’s not just Sky TV making this change. Other providers of TV are axing Netflix’s Basic plan, too. Take EE TV: that will also withdraw Netflix Basic from its bundles for new customers. Virgin Media does the same for Netflix with its TV bundles, but it stopped including Basic in those bundles back in July. If you’re a new customer with Virgin Media, that means you won’t get Netflix Basic either.

Though disappointing from the point of view of a user who liked the ad-free version of Netflix, remember that there would be so much great content available within the Standard plan, with HD quality and a possibility to watch on different devices. The ads are intended to provide the customer with continuous flows while watching.

In other words, Sky TV customers will probably shift from the Netflix Basic package to the Standard package with ads from next month. While having ads is a big part of their change, be assured that Sky is doing its best to make this as painless as possible by playing the ads only during the breaks and not in kids’ profiles. So get ready to watch your favorite shows on Netflix through Sky TV in a whole new way!

Now, if you’re looking to skip out on ads altogether, you may have to look at other options, or be ready for this new ad-supported Netflix experience. The TV world is one of change, and it seems like this is the next tectonic shift in how we enjoy our favorite shows and movies.
