Silencing Critics with Slot: The Unexpected Promise of Liverpool

This week, Arne Slot will be able to train with a full Liverpool squad for the first time. What a scene it is going to be when the Dutchman turns out to be the only important face coming through the training ground door of the club. Other Premier League teams spent a lot in transfers; Liverpool, however, has been abnormally quiet in the window.

With a fortnight to go until the season kicks off, naturally nerves are jangling around Anfield. The fear is that Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, might be stifling Slot’s chances for a dream start. But the usual outrage is muted.

Jurgen Klopp has left behind a very good squad. The revamp of last season’s midfield and the Carabao Cup victory with a youthful side have assuaged concerns. Moreover, according to the club’s new sporting director Richard Hughes, a late spree of transfers could be in store.

But the greatest source of calm is Liverpool’s scorching pre-season form under Slot. It has silenced the critics after he oversaw a very impressive set of performances in the pre-season.

Of course, friendlies can be deceiving. Star players are usually resting, and rarely will you find any team playing at full strength. Still, Liverpool’s dominance – three wins, six scored, one conceded – is hard to ignore. Slot’s Reds are sharp, hungry, and ready to challenge.
It’s early days, but the Dutchman is making a compelling case for himself. With or without new signings, Liverpool fans have every reason to feel optimistic.
