There was a human cry when Lando Norris scored a sensational Dutch Grand Prix triumph over the reigning champion, Max Verstappen, dominantly in a thriller of both skills and strategies.
The race began with some excitement as Verstappen dove right past Norris to take an early lead on the first lap. Better determination and speed in his McLaren overcame that very shortly, however. And having had a poor first lap—again, this has been the way a few times earlier in this season—Norris then used all the control and precision he could to negotiate a turn.
Still, the race’s turning point arguably came on lap 18 when Norris regained the lead. From there, he was never to be headed, inexorably pulling away to finish up the road 22.8s up the road from Verstappen.
Charles Leclerc secured the final spot on the podium, holding off a strong charge from Oscar Piastri in the closing laps.
Norris kept Verstappen, the in-form driver over the previous years at the Dutch Grand Prix, under continuous pressure throughout the entire race. Verstappen gave his best shot but never got even close to a real opportunity for an attack on the lead of the McLaren driver.
“That was quite the win for Norris—it definitely set both him and McLaren up with a big boost in what has been a challenging season. It also gave Verstappen 70 points clear with nine races left, which certainly leaves the title battle far from over yet.”.
A Masterclass in Driving
Norris, by contrast, was simply exceptional—from that appalling start that somehow gave him a fighting chance, then keeping one foot in and of the gas from Verstappen: sheer skill, will, and determination; just compensation heaped upon well-deserved victory for the gifted, gritty youngster from Britain.
The Dutch Grand Prix helped that cause, with fans being treated to some other frenetic races around the grand prix. The center of discussion shifted to Norris following his strong performance at the back of the grid. The Road Ahead With the Dutch Grand Prix now in their rearview mirrors, both Norris and McLaren will hope to maintain that momentum when it comes to throwing down the challenge more towards Verstappen and Red Bull over the course of the championship. The remaining races of the season are sure to be entertaining and unpredictable, as the title battle is still far from decided.
