Kylian Mbappé scored his first official goal for Real Madrid on Wednesday as the Spanish giants defeated Atalanta 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup played in Warsaw.
But there was Kylian Mbappé, already at Madrid after leaving Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer once his contract had expired in June, to quickly put the match to bed. He struck the second, with the goal he despatched from a pass by Jude Bellingham following one from Federico Valverde in the second period to put the match to bed.
This win brought another trophy to Madrid’s club, which had won the Champions League this season by beating Borussia Dortmund, and marked their sixth UEFA Super Cup victory.
The first half was filled with a back-and-forth type of performance, with both sides going close on goal. In fact, a miscued header that hit the top of the bar by Eder Militao almost credited Watford with an important opener. Rodrygo hit the bar from close range with a thumping effort. Courtois was the man denying Madrid as he made a quite magnificent stop from Pasalic’s headed effort shortly after the break.
“The game turned on its head in the 59th minute, though, as with a moment of genius from the back, Vinícius Júnior found Valverde for a simple tap-in.” Atalanta’s goalkeeper Juan Musso did his best to keep the chances of his side alive, as he made sharp saves from both Vinícius and Bellingham, but Madrid was unrelenting.
Mbappé then scored with great composure in the 69th minute from Bellingham’s assist as Real Madrid went on to win the game in a very comfortable manner.
