Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have decided to call it quits once more, consummating their relationship with a divorce after two years of marriage. Court documents filed on a date that holds sentimental value for the couple closed the proverbial book on their love story.
It was almost two decades after their initial engagement was scrapped that 55-year-old Lopez and 52-year-old Affleck reignited their romance. The two stars had already married once in a secretive Vegas marriage ceremony back in July 2022 before throwing a more upmarket celebration a month later. However, Lopez listed their separation date as April 26, citing no prenuptial agreement.
The two became romantically involved in the early 2000s when they first worked together on the set of the romantic comedy “Gigli.” They turned instantaneously into one of the most talked-about couples in Hollywood, having been actually nicknamed “Bennifer.” Their relationship was memorialized in Lopez’s hit music video “Jenny From The Block,” where Affleck made an unforgettable appearance.
Although the two were obviously great together, the media was too strong, so they put off a wedding date from 2003, and by early 2004, the two had split up. Each would wed other partners—Lopez with Marc Anthony, from whom she has twins, and Affleck with Jennifer Garner, from whom he got three children.
Rumors of a reunion circulated in 2021 after the two were spotted together; later that year, they confirmed “Bennifer” was back on. Lopez has said that their breakup the first time around was one of the most painful experiences she ever had, and it was “the biggest heartbreak” she’d ever felt.
The couple’s two weddings in 2022 seemed to signal new beginnings. There was their intimate, low-key wedding in Las Vegas, followed by a grander affair at Affleck’s Georgia estate with a string of friends and family. Lopez reflected on their journey to get to this moment: “Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient.”
Despite all that, though, the rumors of trouble in paradise started to pop up toward the beginning of 2024. That May, during a press conference for her Netflix film Atlas, when a question came up about the rumors, Lopez deflected with her answer, and fans were left wondering what was up.
Up until now, neither Lopez nor Affleck has commented on the divorce. The twice-sweeping-the-globe-off-its-feet romance between the two actors appears to have reached the final page in its story.
