Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen Returns: A Second Helping of British Grit.

Rumors have it that Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is getting a second season. It feels like finding a gold nugget in your back garden, very exciting and not expected. That first season was nothing short of the gold standard of British Crime drama: sleek, biting, explosive, densely populated with unforgettable characters—all combined into a heady cocktail.

Returning, too, are Theo James as ostensible dim bulb but more and more sharp-eyed Eddie Horniman, not to mention Kaya Scodelario as his sharp-tongued partner in crime, Susie Glass. Still, it’s the electrifying performance of Daniel Ings as Freddy—Eddie’s hapless but hilarious brother—that really stole it. His cocaine-induced chicken escapade has assumed a place among the pantheon of great television moments.

While we’re lusting for more of this threesome, the thought of new faces in any potential Gentlemen universe is just as exhilarating. Who might be the next colorful character crossing through Ritchie’s world of slick suits and even slicker dialogue? We can’t wait to find out.

This old-school crime drama knew its way around the complex world of high-stakes crime, working off some nostalgia-laden swag reminiscent of classic gangsters, while its cutthroat tactics were matched against those of drug lords. Double-crosses, unexpected alliances, and a great deal of very British humor heretofore never seen in entertainment filled this domain. With a second season forthcoming, one can only assume the boundaries Ritchie will push this time around in chaos and intrigue.

It’s one of the series’ greatest strengths: somehow, it weaves fast-paced action into quiet character development. The characters in The Gentlemen are imperfect and messy, with character dynamics standing on an even plane of interest alongside a world of crime. We’re hoping season two will delve deeper into the backstories of our favorite characters to give us richer insight into their motivations.

Of course, no sequel to Gentlemen would be complete without a generous helping of Ritchie’s signature style. The sharp dialogue, stylish cinematography, and infectious energy which defined the first season need to translate into the next. We’re bracing ourselves for more of those unforgettable one-liners, more jaw-dropping plot twists, and more of those leave-one-gasping-for-air moments.

With filming on everyone’s mind, there’s heaps of speculation as to how it will go. Will it be a direct continuation from the first season, or will it find a new chapter in life for these lovable characters? However, one thing was with surety: The Gentlemen is back, and the entertainment is going to get a whole lot loud.
