The Return of the Ford Capri: A New Era of Electric Style

On quite a bold note, Ford has revived one of its most legendary nameplates—Capri—to the present time in the form of an electric coupe-SUV. It was over half a century ago when the original Capri stormed the automotive scene in Europe, placing American muscle car flair in the hands of working people. Ford is banking on doing wondrous things all over again, but with a difference.

The new Ford Capri is based on common ancestry with models such as the Ford Explorer and a host of Volkswagen Group vehicles due to using the MEB electric platform. Cooperation, in turn, will ensure that the new Capri gets the very latest in technology but upon a solid and tried-and-tested platform.

Unlike the conventional combustion engine used in the previous model, the new Capri will have an all-electric powertrain. It has different configurations, in which the customer can choose to have a 52kWh battery with 168bhp for the Standard Range model or opt for higher ones that would provide more power—for instance, Extended Range RWD that gives out 282bhp, or the dual-motor Extended Range AWD that produces 335bhp. These variants are supposed to have some respectable performance stats—more precisely, the AWD can hit 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds.

Ford reckons driving the new Capri will be just as fun as the Explorer, only more fun, more dynamic. Lower—at least in profile—than its boxier sister car and with tauter suspension, the Capri should provide a more dynamic and involving drive.

Capri. The Extended Range versions feature 77kWh to 79Wh battery packs; ranges of up to 390 miles in a single charge are possible in the RWD. Advanced charging of up to 185kW cuts recharging time from 10% to 80% down to as low as 26 minutes.

The Capri combines comfort and technology inside. One of the standouts is a 14.6-inch full-color central touchscreen—not only for the infotainment system but also for its adjustability to ensure optimal view angles. Adding this to a wirelessly inductive charging pad and support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Capri has the modern driver fairly well catered for.

Practicality certainly hasn’t been forgotten, either. Despite the coupe-like silhouette, there remains ample headroom and even legroom aboard the capacious Capri. Comfort is focused on by the interior design, with well-profiled supportive seats and high-quality materials to go with it—the kind of interior that may make every drive simply a delight.
