Texas Governor Greg Abbott took to social media to mock President Joe Biden after his approval rating hit a new low, coinciding with former President Donald Trump’s conviction in New York. On Thursday, Biden’s approval rating dropped to 37.8 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight’s aggregation, the same day Trump became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.

Abbott, a staunch Republican and ally of Trump who has frequently clashed with the Biden administration over immigration policies, hinted at a connection between these events in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “OUCH!!” Abbott wrote, sharing a graphic depicting the decline in Biden’s approval rating. “Biden’s approval rating has hit an all-time low following the New York conviction of Trump.”

The conviction involved a New York jury finding Trump guilty of all 34 charges of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels claimed to have had an extramarital sexual encounter with Trump, which he has denied along with any wrongdoing.

In his response to the verdict, Trump quickly pointed fingers at the Biden administration, accusing them of orchestrating the trial to damage him politically. “Our whole country is being rigged right now,” Trump declared. “This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent. We’ll fight till the end, and we’ll win because our country has gone to hell.”

Despite Trump’s defiant stance, a snap poll conducted after the verdict revealed that half of Americans believed Trump was guilty, while only 30 percent thought he was not. This public opinion poses a significant challenge for Trump as he faces multiple legal battles.

Biden, meanwhile, faces his own vulnerabilities on several critical issues, including immigration, crime, and his support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. His approval rating has hovered around 38 percent for several months, with Newsweek reporting last month that he is the least popular president in 75 years.

Currently, on Day 1,228 of his presidency, Biden’s approval rating stands at 38.6 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight. For comparison, Trump had an approval rating of 42.4 percent at the same point in his presidency, while Barack Obama had 47.8 percent, George W. Bush had 44.5 percent, and Bill Clinton had 54.1 percent.
