Elon Musk is anticipating the advent of superhuman artificial intelligence (AI) that could outsmart any individual on Earth as early as next year, a notable advancement from his previous projection that superintelligent AI would emerge by 2029. Speaking during a livestreamed interview on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk expressed his estimation, stating, “My expectation is that we will witness AI surpassing the cognitive abilities of any singular human by the end of the upcoming year. The limitation last year stemmed from chip shortages.” He elaborated, noting, “The current bottleneck revolves around the transition to a voltage transformer supply, which we anticipate will be resolved within the next year or two, ultimately culminating in an electricity supply-based AI infrastructure.”
In 2023, Elon Musk had outlined a five- to six-year timeline for the emergence of superintelligence, concurrently expressing apprehension regarding its implications. He remarked, “If it were within my capability to pause the progression of highly advanced AI or digital superintelligence, I would do so without hesitation. However, such a prospect appears unrealistic, thus XAI [Extended Artificial Intelligence] is poised to develop AI capabilities, ideally in a constructive manner. It is imperative for us to acknowledge the potential risks associated with a dystopian future depicted in scenarios akin to Terminator, thereby preempting such outcomes.”
Amidst discussions on technological advancements, Musk also drew attention to the latest iteration of his chatbot, Grok AI, affirming its parity with OpenAI’s GPT-4 in a recent interview.
In a separate development, Elon Musk engaged in a dispute with a Brazilian Supreme Court justice, advocating for the official’s resignation or impeachment due to court rulings directed against X. The justice emphasized, “The social network X is obligated to comply with judicial directives, which encompass refraining from reactivating accounts that the Supreme Court has mandated to be suspended.”
