Snoop Dogg, the legendary rapper and producer, has been named the CEO of Death Row Records. The announcement was made by Chris Taylor, President and CEO of MNRK, the label that currently owns the iconic hip-hop label.
In a statement, Taylor said, “Snoop is clearly the executive to take Death Row into its next 30 years. MNRK has been honored to oversee this legendary brand over the last decade and enjoyed introducing it to millions of new fans in 2021 through our award-winning 30th anniversary.”
Death Row Records was founded in 1991 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, and The D.O.C. and was home to some of the most influential hip-hop artists of the 90s, including Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, and Tha Dogg Pound. The label was responsible for some of the most iconic hip-hop albums of all time, including Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, and Tupac’s All Eyez on Me.
In its heyday, Death Row Records was one of the most successful labels in hip-hop, selling millions of albums and dominating the charts. But the label eventually fell on hard times, with Knight’s legal troubles and the death of Tupac leading to its eventual demise.
In 2006, MNRK acquired the rights to the Death Row Records catalog and has since been working to revive the label. In 2021, MNRK celebrated the 30th anniversary of Death Row Records with a series of events and releases, including a documentary, a vinyl box set, and a new compilation album.
Now, with Snoop Dogg at the helm, MNRK is looking to take Death Row Records to the next level. Snoop is one of the most successful and respected hip-hop artists of all time, and his experience and influence in the industry will be invaluable to the label.
Snoop has already begun to make his mark on Death Row Records, signing the rapper KXNG Crooked to the label and releasing a new compilation album, The Return of Doggystyle Records. The album features new music from Snoop and some of the label’s other artists, including KXNG Crooked, Daz Dillinger, and Lady of Rage.
It’s clear that Snoop Dogg is the perfect choice to lead Death Row Records into the future. With his experience and influence in the hip-hop industry, Snoop is sure to take the label to new heights. We look forward to seeing what he has in store for Death Row Records in the coming years.
