Adam and Eve are the first man and woman created by God according to the Bible. Adam is mentioned first in Genesis 1, with a collective sense, as “mankind”. In Genesis 2-3, his name carries the definite article ha, equivalent to English “the”, indicating that this is “the man”. Adam was created from the dust of the ground and given life by God’s breath.

Eve was created as a companion for Adam, from one of his ribs. She was made to be a “help meet” for him, and to be his companion. She was given the same breath of life as Adam, and was made in the image of God.

Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, where they were to tend and care for it. God gave them the commandment not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. However, they were tempted by the serpent and ate from the tree, thus disobeying God’s commandment.

God punished Adam and Eve for their disobedience by expelling them from the Garden of Eden. He also cursed the serpent, saying that it would crawl on its belly and eat dust all the days of its life. God also cursed the ground, saying that it would bring forth thorns and thistles, and that Adam would have to work hard to make a living from it.

Adam and Eve were the first man and woman created by God, and their story is an important part of the Bible. They were given the commandment not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, but they disobeyed God and were punished for it. Their story serves as a reminder to us that we should obey God’s commands and not be tempted by the things of this world.
