Charli XCX, the pop powerhouse known for her energetic performances, has revealed the physical toll her artistry takes on her body. The singer-songwriter confessed to frequent onstage pain, a consequence of the demanding nature of her shows.
For example, she says, "I've done a lot of physical damage to my body from performing, and I'm often in a lot of pain when I perform. Physically, I have nerve damage in my neck from things I've done on the stage," Charli recently shared in an interview.
The physicality of her performances, often with intense choreography and stage antics, has started to take a toll on her health. Pain notwithstanding, Charli continues to push her limits, driven by her passion for music and her desire to deliver unforgettable live shows.
A Balancing Act: The Emotional and Physical Demands of Touring
Touring is exhilarating; it can be such an exhausting activity. Charli had even described the stage as the "angry place" for her, implying she brought emotional intensity in their performances. She confessed that this unrelenting traveling and being given pressure to give the crowd a perfect show are "emotionally draining".
"Touring is really emotionally taxing," she confessed. "The stage — especially these days — is a very angry place for me.
But she found some solace in her work with Troye Sivan for the 'Sweat' tour. It made the tour a more positive experience, and less emotionally draining for Charli.
A Look Back: From Humble Beginnings to Stardom
Charli has been on her way to stardom since her early teens. She released her debut album, '14,' when she was just 14 years old. This album, she says now, is a mixed bag.
"God, I hate that album so much. I haven't listened to it for a decade, at least," she said.
But it was in this period that she started to find her love for electronic music-the genre for which she became in the future. Following raves and the club culture, Charli began experimenting with various different styles and sounds and brought her own unique identity as a pop artist.
Her major breakthrough came when her second album, 'True Romance,' was launched in 2013. This album further ignited her artistic expression with a rich vibrancy of pop, electronic, and alternative music that catapulted her to international prominence.
Busy 2025: New Music, Tours, and Festivals
Charli has a pretty busy 2025, with several exciting projects in the pipeline. She is scheduled to headline Coachella and Primavera Sound, as well as a US arena tour. New music is also in the works, and she's been dropping hints about a new album.
Despite the physical and emotional toll of her work, Charli remains an ardent professional. This passion for music continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
