Gamers have recently noticed that the PlayStation 5 boxes no longer feature the 8K logo that was initially displayed at the system’s launch in 2020. This logo had promised support for future titles with 8K graphics, but over the past few months, Sony has quietly removed any mention of 8K from the packaging.

According to PlayStation Lifestyle, a viral Reddit thread brought this change to light. Some fans have voiced their frustration on social media, accusing Sony of false advertising. One user expressed, "I have been endlessly bitching since the PS5 released about that 8K Badge. It is false Advertising and Sony should be sued for it. The PS5 while more than capable of displaying an 8k Resolution, even if it's just for video playback only, is not capable of actually outputting at…"

Back in 2020, Sony's official FAQ stated, "PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software." However, to date, the only game offering 8K resolution on the PS5 is "The Touryst," which has visuals reminiscent of Minecraft rather than advanced graphics.

The reality is that 8K technology has not been widely adopted by video game developers or filmmakers. While 8K televisions are available on the market, it might take a considerable amount of time, if ever, for 8K to become a standard in gaming or entertainment.

Sony is not alone in this situation. Microsoft also claimed 8K support for its Xbox Series X in 2020. However, similar to the PS5, the lack of 8K titles for the Xbox Series X is due to the same reasons—limited adoption and development of 8K content.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen if and when 8K will become a significant feature for consoles. For now, the removal of the 8K logo from the PlayStation 5 boxes reflects the current state of the technology and its adoption within the gaming community.
