From January 25 to May 18, 2025, train services between East Kilbride and Thornliebank will be on pause for a major railway upgrade. This extended break isn’t just for routine repairs – it’s part of a £140 million project funded by the Scottish Government and led by Network Rail, aimed at electrifying the railway between East Kilbride and Glasgow. This project promises greener, more reliable, and efficient train services for passengers in the future.
Network Rail has big plans for this upgrade. During these four months, they’ll install new infrastructure, including overhead power cables, and lengthen the double-track stretch between East Kilbride and Hairmyres. This will allow electric trains to run smoothly and help reduce emissions by making the trains more environmentally friendly. Network Rail and the Scottish Government view this as an important step toward decarbonizing rail transport.
But, to accomplish all this, they need to close the railway for 16 weeks. Working on the tracks with no trains running means they can complete these major upgrades more quickly and efficiently. Though this might be inconvenient for travelers, Network Rail hopes that giving everyone three months' notice will help people plan alternate routes.

Gerry McQuade, Network Rail’s Capital Delivery Director, emphasized the importance of these engineering works. He noted, “This program of extended engineering works is a critical point in the delivery of the electrification of the East Kilbride line. Closing the railway is never an easy decision, but the engineering work taking place over these 16 weeks can only be done when no trains are running. This approach allows the completion of these major works in the most efficient, fastest way.”
He understands that a four-month closure will impact passengers and residents near the railway. By notifying everyone in advance, he hopes to give people enough time to make alternate travel plans.
With trains unavailable during this period, ScotRail plans to keep passengers moving through alternative transport options. Mark Ilderton, ScotRail’s Service Delivery Director, shared that although they cannot operate trains to and from East Kilbride for the duration of the closure, a replacement bus service will be arranged.
In the coming weeks, ScotRail will provide more details on their plan, including bus routes, timings, and other available options. The company will update this information on its website and through customer service channels to help passengers plan their trips.
Damian Briody, Head of Rail Projects and Technical Services at Transport Scotland, acknowledged that disruptions can be frustrating for passengers. However, he stressed that this project will ultimately improve rail services. He said, “Whilst any disruption to passengers is unwelcome, we acknowledge the careful consideration which has gone into delivering the significant improvement works taking place during the closure. It is welcome that Network Rail and ScotRail have listened to passengers in planning these works and that they will continue to work closely together to ensure these passengers can make informed journey planning choices.”
Network Rail has ensured that replacement buses will be available during the closure. These buses are meant to serve passengers traveling between the affected stations, minimizing the impact of the shutdown. The goal is to make travel as smooth as possible, even without trains running on this line.
While the electrification work is expected to be completed in December 2025, there’s some exciting news for passengers earlier than that. The brand-new Hairmyres station is scheduled to open in May 2025, as the railway work wraps up. This opening will be a milestone for the project and a welcome addition for the community.
