Nasa invites to live on Mars-like habitat for a year

On Friday, Nasa started taking applications for applicants to live for a year in Mars Dune Alpha, a 1,700-square-foot Martian habitat created by a 3D printer that is inside a building at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The habitat will simulate the challenges of a mission on Mars, including asset limitations, hardware failure, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. Team tasks may include simulated spacewalks, logical research, the use of virtual reality and automated controls, and exchanging communications. The outcomes will give important logical data to validate systems and foster arrangements, Nasa said in a statement.

Nasa is planning three of these missions - known as Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog - with the first starting in the fall (September 1-November 30) one year from now.

"The analog is critical for testing answers to meet the intricate requirements of living on the Martian surface," said Grace Douglas, lead scientist for Nasa's Advanced Food Technology research effort at Nasa's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The application is open only to US citizens or permanent residents in the age bunch between 30-55. Other criteria for determination include proficiency in English, great physical health, and no smoking habit.

On the educational front, a master's certification in a STEM field like engineering, mathematics, or biological, physical, or software engineering from an accredited institution is required. Additionally, the candidates who have finished two years of work on a doctoral program in STEM, or finished a medical degree, or an aircraft tester program will also be considered.

With four years of professional experience, participants who have finished military officer training or a Bachelor of Science in a STEM field may be considered.

Former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield told Associated Press that it was acceptable that Nasa was looking for individuals who are near astronauts. In the past, a Russian pretend Mars mission called Mars 500 didn't end well, partly because the participants were too similar as everyday individuals, Hadfield told AP.
