On December 5, 2024, a star-studded tribute concert was held at the Roundhouse in London to celebrate the life of late Mark Lanegan on what would have been his 60th birthday. The event, Mark Lanegan 60 β A Celebration, included some of the most iconic musicians around, such as Josh Homme, Dave Gahan, Bobby Gillespie, Chrissie Hynde, Alison Mosshart, Greg Dulli, and many more, all coming together to celebrate Lanegan's legacy.
The concert was started by a poignant intro, with Lanegan's version of "Oh! What A Beautiful City," and then performing his favorite songs. Dave Gahan and Soulsavers started off the night with a set that included "Sideways In Reverse," "Low," and "Kingdoms of Rain," while Bobby Gillespie brought his own tribute with "Driving Death Valley Blues." Alison Mosshart of The Kills joined Soulsavers for a powerhouse series of songs, including "Mockingbirds" and "Wedding Dress," capturing the haunting spirit of Lanegan's work.
The evening was laced with emotional moments when Wendi Rose, T Jae Cole, and Janet Ramus led a tribute by singing "Judgement Time." Other heart-wrenching performances came from Greg Dulli, who was performing his songs "Methamphetamine Blues" and "The River Rise" while discussing his close friend Lanegan. Ed Harcourt stripped this back with a haunting take on "One Way Street", before Chrissie Hynde graced the stage, rendering a beautiful tribute with "Kimiko's Dream House" and "Revelator", joined by Lanegan's widow Shelley Brien in a poignant moment.
Josh Homme, who had a particularly close relationship with Lanegan, shared touching reflections on their time together, telling the crowd that while Lanegan would have pretended to dislike the event, he would have appreciated seeing everyone there. Homme performed several songs, including "Carnival" and "El Sol," and invited Mosshart to join him for a heartfelt version of "Come To Me." The first set ended with a powerful performance of "One Hundred Days," a song that Lanegan had recorded with Homme.
The evening ended with an encore by Dulli playing "Dollar Bill" by Gahan, which followed with the performance of "Hit The City," and Shelley Lanegan finished off the night with her entire ensemble on stage to dedicate it to Mark. Over the course of the event, the tribute was truly a mix of music and emotion and memories shared all through the evening as fans and friends gathered to give Lanegan his due celebration. It also marked Homme's return to the stage after recent surgery as his band, Queens of the Stone Age, are set to headline festivals in 2025.
