Zayn Malik has paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne during his concert in Leeds on Saturday night. A moving message lit up the screen at the end of his performance, reading simply: \"Love you bro\". The tribute, which has since been widely shared across social media, included Payne's name and his birth and death years, making it an emotional moment for fans and attendees.
Malik recently performed at Leeds as part of his tour that had already been delayed. His UK tour was to have begun in Edinburgh earlier this week but two scheduled shows in the city were postponed due to what Malik described as "unforeseen circumstances." This was after an announcement in October when the artist postponed his U.S. tour, describing it as a "heartbreaking loss" of Payne.
PAYNE died last month, aged 31, after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina. He died suddenly and the fans were shocked as much as any loved one. His funeral yesterday, at Amersham in Buckinghamshire, brought together his family, friends, and former bandmates. Among the mourners was Payne's girlfriend Kate Cassidy; his former partner Cheryl, with whom he has a son; as well as former One Direction bandmates: Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. At the funeral, Malik is photographed in a black suit with sunglasses on, highly grief-stricken at the loss of his friend. The private ceremony reunited the group under sombre circumstances, united in memory of Payne's life and legacy.
At the Leeds concert at the O2 Academy, Malik performed several hits, including Pillowtalk and My Woman. Fans speculated he might acknowledge Payne somewhere during the event, but it wasn't until the show was closing its curtains that Malik revealed the deeply personal tribute. Alongside the message "Love you bro," a pink heart symbol appeared on the screen, capturing the audience's emotions.
This comes after several recent post-announcement shows by Malik regarding several tour date postponement. He posted on Instagram that the performances scheduled for Edinburgh on November 20 and 21 had been pushed to December 8 and 9. He promised the ticket holders that their original tickets would be kept valid.
Lastly, Malik shared a similar update in October, about his U.S. tour.
Originally slated to begin in San Francisco before moving on to cities such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York, the tour was again delayed following Payne's death. "Given the heartbreaking loss experienced this week, I've decided to delay the U.S. portion of the Stairway to the Sky Tour, Malik wrote in a post, adding that rescheduled dates in January would honor previously purchased tickets. Reflecting on his years with Payne, Malik shared a deeply personal tribute shortly after his passing. "I loved and respected you dearly," he wrote.
"I will carry all the memories I had with you in my heart forever. There are no words that will justify or explain how I am feeling in this moment other than completely devastated. I just hope that wherever you are right now, you're good and that you're at peace and you know how loved you are." Formed in 2010 on The X Factor, One Direction propelled Malik, Payne, Styles, Tomlinson, and Horan to worldwide fame in a whirlwind tour, dominating the charts and doing millions of fans around the globe before Malik left to pursue a solo career in 2015. The band had officially disbanded a year later, with each member forging their own path. After the death of Payne, remaining group members showed their love for him through such tribute lines: A collective relief poured into them when they called him "the most vital part" of the group and underlined that bond that they all share. Malik's words presented his emotions with love and respect and its connection that was truly between them.
Though Payne will never be with us again, the memories of him living through those who loved him were plentiful, and the appreciations which Malik gave during the tribute in Leeds illuminated the affinity that each shared in their friendship.
