Legendary rock group The Cure finally announced the release date for their long-awaited new album after an impressive 16 years since their last collection of music. In a really low-key charm, they tipped off the information by putting a very simple black poster on the external wall of the Railway pub in Crawley, where, as it happens, they had played their first ever gig back in 1978.
The poster placed against the gray wall displays something of utmost importance printed in small lettering at the top: the name of the album, Songs of a Lost World. Fans were challenged by the subtlety of the announcement as news finally broke through the band's various social media platforms. The date of the new album's drop is finally set for November 1-that date already etched in the hearts of waiting listeners.Get ready folks. Oh, so it's been nearly two decades since news of a new release from one of the biggest bands of the 1980s broke. Social media became fireworks for excited responses as fans cannot help but share their happiness. "NEW THE CURE ALBUM!!!! AFTER 16 YEARS!!!!!!"reads one user, while another commented, "Album of the century being released." The fever was infectious as one fan declared, "Oh my God, it's happening !
" and yet another one adds, "WE'RE SO BACK."
Commenting, night-time economy advisor for Manchester Sacha Lord said: "The Cure have announced their new album on the first album they released in 16 years by plastering a single poster over the wall of the pub where they played their first gig in 1978. The Railway, Crawley, Sussex. Now that's coolβ¦.and two fingers up to the usual corporate hype."
Second, The Cure made a conscious attempt at posting postcards to their die-hard fans to invite them into the excitement of this album launch. This, not only personalizes the connection between the band and its fans, but also increases community in fans.
The Cure has a history of signature sounds that have been widely classified as gothic and post-punk. To this day, lead singer Robert Smith remains as enigmatic as ever. Fans were left in suspense with regards to information about his latest comeback. A brief promotional video that included the projection of a stone head-on a background of Blackpool has been released. This may either be a new album cover or something more. Some took it as having a certain connotation. Blackpool just so happens to be where Smith was born before shifting residence to Crawley.
In addition to this teaser, billboards in several cities such as Paris and Rome as well as New York, promote the title and artwork of the album. Fans are left to wonder if they plan to make some type of announcement about doing some impromptu performance in Blackpool, where Smith originated from the town. The band made a mysterious website that challenges people to input Roman numerals of the date on which the album was released-to yield I. XI. MMXXIV. This was a very smart move, as it has provided further cause to pique the curiosity of their audience and keep enthusiasm at its peak levels. Meantime, this thrilling news, the band also faced some personal challenges. In a recent post on his blog, longtime keyboarder Roger O'Donnell of the Cure revealed that in September, he had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. In this particular blog post, O'Donnell goes on to explain in some detail how a series of events made him diagnotised at this particular moment.
He had actually ignored symptoms that now made up his diagnosis .Late last November, he was forced to leave The Cure's Latin America tour for health reasons. The Cure has publicly expressed their support for him and wishes him speedy recovery.
Whether it will spur them to greater heights is yet to be seen, but they have inspired many through this turbulent journey, in both their private and professional capacities. Formed in 1978 and with several lineup changes since, the only constant has been frontman and guitarist Robert Smith. For those who may not know, their earlier releases were nothing short of phenomenal; eleven consecutive top 20 records released from 1980 through 2004. Their latest album is 4:13 Dream, released in 2008.
The biggest hits by the Cure, which include tracks like "Friday, I'm In Love," "Boys Don't Cry," and "Close To You," have left their indelible print on the music landscape. The band's influence was just recently rewarded in 2019 as they were one of the inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, making them, indeed, one of the defining acts of their era. While fans' anticipation for Songs of a Lost World lingers like eagerness, it is less nostalgic and more about the new sound, because this return is more than just a comeback-it is that moment that unites generations of fans and rekindles magic, which built them legends.
