It's Liverpool's historic Beatles Venue turned iconic Airbnb

A Liverpool venue that helped launch the career of the Beatles has been turned into an Airbnb, giving fans the opportunity to stay in the place where it all began. The Casbah Coffee Club—the former home of the Best family and one of the major locations during the early days of the Quarrymen, which eventually developed into the Beatles—can now be rented out for overnight stays.

This was an iconic house in West Derby, Liverpool, bought by Mona Best after an improbable win on a racehorse. It was this property that was most in disrepair, resembling something akin to "Dracula's castle" according to Pete Best, that would become the birthplace of one of the most famous music acts ever.

It was Mona Best's bold move, back in 1954, when she pawned her jewelry to bet the proceeds on a long-shot horse named Never Say Die in the Epsom Derby, ridden by a young Lester Piggott. That moment turned Mona into a homeowner and set the stage for the beginnings of the Beatles. The moment the horse crossed the finish line, Mona leaped to her feet and said, "I've won the house!

"It was only after her ecstatic proclamation that the family realised the gamble she had taken. In 1959 Mona decided to turn the cellar of their new home into the Casbah Coffee Club, a music venue for local talent. The first band she booked was the Les Stewart Quartet, featuring George Harrison.". The group broke up, however, before a record of their performance was released, and George brought Mona around to two friends, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. They, with Harrison, became the Quarrymen and appeared 13 times at the club, for which they received £3 per performance.

They later traveled to Germany but came back as the Beatles and more than 40 times at the Casbah helped etch the place in British musical lore. Now, Beatles fans worldwide can spend their nights in the very rooms of their idols' residence and playing area. This former Best family home, which reopened as a tourist attraction with prices from £150 per night, has been turned into holiday flats led by Roag Best, Pete's younger brother and son to Mona Best and Neil Aspinall, the Beatles' road manager.

Roag, born in what is now known as the McCartney suite, had been slaving away on the project for over three years, and came away with a few dings and bruises. The rooms acknowledge the history of this band through discreet Beatles memorabilia: photographs, posters, guitars. Rooms are individually named after the key members of the early Beatles lineup: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best, and original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe. Notably missing is a room dedicated to Ringo Starr, the band's replacement drummer for Pete Best.

But Pete Best doesn't bear any malice. "It doesn't worry me one iota," says he about the decision not to include him in the band. Looking back now on his life, Pete recounts that though he was somewhat saddened by the breakup at one time, he moved on and fully enjoyed his life after his short career with the Beatles. For the Best family, in reality, this Casbah Coffee Club-to-Airbnb renovation is a very personal journey in making sure Mona Best's memory lives on. Pete Best believes his mother would be quite delighted with how the place now looks and her dream still living right in front of everyone.

"She brought music to the kids of Merseyside," he proudly said, adding that she would be proud of both the legacy left behind and the one they continue to build.

Roag Best continued, "I'm very proud of what we've done here. I think me mam would be over the moon with the end result." For the Best family, this isn't merely a business renovation; it's a monument to the woman whose drive and foresight helped shape the future course of music history.

Among the first guests to sample the newly refurbished rooms were Evelyn Weatherston and Andy Rees from Glasgow, both Beatles fans. The couple had visited the Casbah many years ago but leaped at the opportunity to return and stay at the place where so much music history was made. "It's very special… the fact that you can now stay here is very exciting," said Weatherston. What was once an unseen jewel of Liverpool's music scene, the Casbah Coffee Club, now offers an opportunity for Beatles fans to connect with the history of the band up close and in a very personal way, all from the very place it all began.
