In a surprising turn of events during the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying session, the FIA has penalized Mercedes following a peculiar incident involving Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, is set to start the race in fifth position, while Max Verstappen secured pole at the Red Bull Ring.

During the session, Hamilton was outqualified by his teammate George Russell, who secured third place, while Lando Norris will join Verstappen on the front row.

The incident occurred in Q3 when Hamilton, leaving the Mercedes garage, inadvertently dragged a rear jack and an extraction pipe into the pit lane. This unusual mishap prompted an immediate investigation by the FIA.

Following the investigation, the FIA determined that Hamilton's car was released in an unsafe manner, violating Article 34.14 a). Consequently, Mercedes was fined 5,000 euros.

The FIA stated: “The Stewards reviewed video evidence and heard from the team representative. Car 44 was released from the garage in an unsafe manner, dragging a jack and an exhaust extractor behind it. The team promptly instructed the driver to stop to prevent further damage or danger.

“Teams have the right to appeal certain decisions within the time limits specified by the FIA International Sporting Code and FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules.

“Stewards’ decisions are made independently of the FIA based on regulations, guidelines, and evidence presented.”

Despite the setback, Hamilton remains focused on the race ahead, aiming to convert his fifth-place start into a strong performance.
