Dubai has officially commenced construction on what is set to become "the world's largest" terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, according to a recent government announcement.

Once fully operational, this colossal terminal will have the capacity to handle up to 260 million passengers annually, making it a significant addition to Dubai's aviation infrastructure. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, highlighted its scale, noting that it will be "five times larger than the current Dubai International Airport," which is already one of the busiest in the world.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and CEO of Emirates, provided further insights into the project, stating that the initial phase is slated for completion within a decade. Upon completion, the terminal will have the capacity to serve 150 million passengers annually.

The new terminal at Al Maktoum Airport is not just a standalone project but is positioned to become the new base for flagship carrier Emirates, its low-cost counterpart Flydubai, and other airline partners. This strategic move aims to enhance global connectivity to and from Dubai, solidifying its position as a key player in the global aviation industry.

Despite its ambitious plans, Al Maktoum Airport, located on the outskirts of the city, has yet to attract a significant portion of Dubai's air traffic since its inception in 2010. However, authorities envision it as a replacement for the current Dubai International Airport, which is limited in its expansion capabilities due to its central location in the city.

With an investment totaling AED 128 billion ($34.85 billion), the commencement of construction marks a significant milestone in Dubai's vision for the future of air travel.
