Onslaught of Violence on Stage Marks End of Rock Band's Reunion Tour
Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro has issued an apology to the support bands whose North American tour was scotched when the band ended its reunion tour shortly after a shocking altercation on stage between Navarro and lead singer Perry Farrell-quietly, also, since the same day, with a new single, "True Love.".
The dramatic incident occurred when Farrell confronted Navarro mid-performance which escalated into a physical confrontation as he threw a punch. Before long the venue crew got Farrell off stage, but the damage had been done. In the wake of the incident, Farrell released a public apology to his bandmates, specifically Navarro, and their fans, stating that his actions helped to clarify the situation. A couple of weeks later, the band announced that they would be canceling their remaining tour dates.
On Thursday, Navarro commemorated his new song "True Love" with an Instagram post accompanied by an accompanying visual clip where he professed himself to be proud of the work put into his single while being sad because he fears that the fans would never in life get to hear it live.
"New Jane's Addiction track released today, 'True Love,'" Navarro wrote. "I am proud of the work we did on this song, but I am equally saddened by the fact that you will likely never hear it live."
With that, and simultaneously with that, Navarro did post a sincere apology to the bands that have been along for the ride with Jane's Addiction on their tour: @crawlersband and @loveandrocketsofficial, as well as each of their crews, for the disruption that the early end of the tour has prompted:"I also want to publicly apologize to our crew, @crawlersband and their crew, and to @loveandrocketsofficial and their crew.". Thanks for traveling with us this long, he wrote to his readers. "I am gutted that things ended this way and that so many jobs were lost as a result. May all of our hearts mend together," Navarro added, signing off with a note of melancholy over the way the events turned out.
Earlier this week, Navarro, along with bass player Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins, published a joint statement regarding the cancellation of this tour. Farrell's major mental health struggles and his recurrent behavior are the main reasons for it, they clarified.
Because of a pattern of recurring behavior and mental health issues on the part of our lead singer Perry Farrell, we have been left with no other alternative but to cancel the US tour, it concluded. Our concern for his personal health and safety and our own left us no choice. We wish him well in finding whatever help he needs.
The statement expressed deep regret for disappointing the fans who purchased tickets, citing no safe way forward that would offer a reliable performance each night. "Our hearts are broken. Dave, Eric, and Stephen," the statement concluded.
In his own statement of apology, Farrell committed a couple of pages to the events of the weekend and admitted struggeling with fallout from the on-stage altercation. "I apologized directly to Navarro as well as the rest of my bandmates, fans, loved ones in general for my behavior during that incident," he wrote.
"This has been a really tough weekend, and after having had the space and time to process everything, I feel that it is proper for me to apologize publicly to my bandmates - and especially Dave Navarro - our fans, our family, and friends for my actions during this Friday's show," Farrell said. "Unfortunate as it was to have reached my breaking point, that was an inexcusable outcome, and I am taking full responsibility for how I handled things.".
But while as much as Farrell's apology might have gone towards making amends, one might say that Navarro's statement translates to rather a bleak future for the band and whether any probable reunion would be possible.
With "True Love" released, fans are now to confront the reality that this latest find from Jane's Addiction may well spell the end of this band's long and tumultuous journey, if only for this lifetime.
