The BBC has concluded its investigation into alleged conduct by Tim Westwood while he was at the broadcaster, but it has been asked to delay publication of its findings by the Metropolitan Police. The review, which was initially expected to be published before Christmas last year, is now being delayed because of ongoing criminal investigations.
This inquiry, commissioned in 2022, dealt with what the BBC knew about the alleged actions of Westwood, the prominent hip-hop DJ who worked with the corporation for many years. While the results of the review are ready, they cannot be made public now for fear of interfering with any potential criminal proceedings.
A recent request under freedom of information revealed the BBC had spent more than Β£3 million on the investigations. Westwood, a 67-year-old woman, has faced accusations about historical sexual abuse from several other women. She has wholly denied all accusations of inappropriate behavior in her life.
The police have sent a "file of evidence" to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over allegations made at the height of Westwood's career. Prosecutors are now deciding whether to charge him. In July, the BBC said the investigation was over but said that report could not be published at the time because the police were still investigating.
On Thursday, the BBC confirmed that the Met Police had requested the broadcaster to delay the publication of the report, saying that such a decision would give the authorities more time to determine the potential impact the release of the report might have on the investigation.
We have consulted with Gemma White KC, and she agrees that it is correct to stop publication in these circumstances," the spokesperson said. The independent reviewer, who was Gemma White KC, concurred with the decision for postponing the publication; the emphasis was on ensuring it would not interfere with the live criminal process.
The BBC pointed out its intention to publish a report of the review after it is completed. However, the corporation further stated that this delay will be disappointing to those who participated in the inquiry and appreciated those who came forward. The BBC reassured the public that it is working closely with the relevant authorities and will provide an update when it is appropriate to do so, ensuring that the publication of the report will not hinder any ongoing criminal investigations.
This decision to hold back the report indicates the delicate balance the BBC must strike between transparency and the need to respect the integrity of legal proceedings. The focus remains on pursuing justice without interference from external factors as the investigation into Tim Westwood's past actions continues.
