Who is the legend of Indian football?

The legend of Indian football, PK Banerjee, is a name that will forever be remembered in the annals of Indian football history. He, along with Tulsidas Balaram and Chuni Goswami, constituted the holy trinity of Indian football’s Golden Era. After his international football debut in 1955, the enigmatic attacker played a huge role in shaping India into an Asian powerhouse.

Banerjee was born in Kolkata in 1936 and his football career began in 1950 when he joined the Eastern Railways Club. He was soon noticed by the Indian national team selectors and made his international debut in 1955 against Burma in the Quadrangular Tournament. He was part of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, and also represented India in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

Banerjee was an exceptional player who was known for his speed, dribbling skills and passing accuracy. He was a master of the through-ball and could create chances out of nothing. He was also a natural leader and captained the Indian team in several international tournaments.

Banerjee was also a great coach and guided the Indian team to the Asian Cup in 1964. He also coached the Indian team in the 1982 Asian Games, where they won the bronze medal. He also coached the Indian team to the 1985 Nehru Cup and the 1986 Merdeka Cup.

Banerjee was also a great administrator and was appointed as the Technical Director of the All India Football Federation in 1991. He was also the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Asian Football Confederation from 1994 to 1997.

Banerjee was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990 and the FIFA Order of Merit in 2004. He was also awarded the Mohun Bagan Ratna in 2005 and the AIFF Player of the Year in 2006.
